Haley grew up in a small town outside of Bourbonnais, Illinois. As a young child she learned to ride horses and helped manage a farm just a mile from her home. She worked as a horseback rider and trainer for nearly seven years before leaving her hometown to attend the University of Illinois. At Illinois, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and worked as an undergraduate laboratory and research assistant in Dr. Parsons' Poultry Nutrition Laboratory. She soon realized she wanted to pursue further education in this area of research, so after receiving her Bachelor’s degree she started pursing a Master’s in Poultry Nutrition. During her time as a graduate student she worked on several laying hen, chicken, rooster and broiler trials and managed Dr. Parsons' Poultry Nutrition Laboratory. She focused her research on determining the lysine requirement in laying hens using two different titration methodologies. After earning her Master's degree, she started working with Dr. Stein as a laboratory technician and manager. Her responsibilities included assisting graduate students with laboratory techniques and managing experiments, the laboratories and undergraduate assistants.

Haley is now working as an animal welfare auditor at FACTA.
