Andrea Mallea

Andrea Paola Mallea Ortiz was born in Lima, the capital city of Peru. She studied animal science at National Agrarian University (UNALM) and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 2017. She has been involved in swine production since 2015, when she became a research intern at the Swine Research Farm at UNALM. There was where she found her love for pigs. When she finished college, she did her own research project: “Algae meal in weaned piglets diets and its effects on performance and intestinal integrity”. She defended her thesis and obtained her engineer degree in 2020.
In 2018, she traveled to the USA to be part of the research team in Smithfield’s Research & Development Department. Andrea did most of the time experiments about influenza vaccines on newborn piglets, but also different trials about meat science in the packing plant and nutrition in the feed mill and nurseries.
In 2020 she returned to the United States to be part of Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory as a Visiting Scholar, where she expects to learn much more about swine nutrition and gain more experience doing trials.
She appreciates the opportunity that Dr. Stein gave her and feels really grateful for being part of his team.
