Dr. Yanhong Liu is from Jiaozuo, Henan, China. She earned her B.S. degree in Biological Sciences (2004) from China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing, China. In August 2004, she enrolled in the Ministry of Agriculture Feed Industry Centre (MAFIC), also in CAU to pursue her M.S. degree in Animal Nutrition. During her M.S. program, she conducted several different experiments, most of which were related to nutrition and immunology. One of her Master's projects was related to effects of particle size and physical form of diets on the mast cell numbers, histamine, and stem cell factor concentration in the small intestine of broiler chickens. After completing her Master's degree in 2007, she was accepted as a graduate research assistantship by Dr. James Pettigrew in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois. She earned her PhD degree on December, 2011. Her Ph.D. study program mainly focused on the effects of plant extracts on immune function and disease resistance in pigs with the goal of looking for some additives for nursery pigs to improve their performance and disease resistance. In addition, her research activities at Illinois also involved projects like utilization of dietary fats in pig diets and selection of different cereals appropriate for young pigs. After obtaining her PhD, she worked with Dr. Stein as a postdoc. Dr. Liu is now an assistant professor at the University of California at Davis.
