Accomplishments

Chelsie Parr, Jessica Lowell, and Diego Navarro all successfully defended their Master's theses in April. First, Chelsie presented her work on "Evaluation of high-protein canola meals fed to growing chicks and weanling pigs."

Chelsie and Jessica will be graduating in May and moving on, while Diego will stay with the lab and start work on his Ph. D. Congratulations to all three!

Congratulations to Caroline Gonzalez-Vega, who was chosen by the Department of Animal Sciences to receive the Mitchell Fellowship in Animal Nutrition. Caroline also won the Wilson G. Pond International Travel Award, given by the American Society of Animal Sciences. In the next newsletter, we'll have more information about the awards and Caroline's plans for them.

Lab activities

Caroline finished a study of additivity of values for apparent and standardized total tract digestibility of calcium in mixed diets. She also started an experiment to determine calcium requirements in weanling pigs.

John finished an experiment to create diets that are deficient only in threonine and lysine. Using these diets, he started an experiment to determine the threonine requirement in growing pigs.

Gloria started an experiment to determine DE and ME in rice products fed to weanling pigs.
