Woongbi Kwon and his wife Hyunji Jo welcomed a son, Miteum Philip Kwon, on April 4. Mother and baby are both doing great. Best wishes to the whole family!

Akemi Yamamoto, who is currently on sabbatical with us, has been promoted to full professor at Gifu University in Japan. Congratulations!

We had a small celebration for Tim Kleinfelter who is leaving after working for us for more than three and a half years. Tim has graduated and is now moving to the East Coast to pursue a job in the financial sector. We thank Tim for all of his hard work for us, and wish him the best of luck in the future.


The College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) recognized Dr. Stein with a Senior Faculty Award for Excellence in Research. Nominators cited his "long legacy of important swine nutrition studies at the University of Illinois” and the "many students and scientists from around the world [who] come to our campus to work in his lab." Dr. Stein accepted the award at the 2017 College Awards banquet on April 17.

New experiments

Woongbi started a study of the effects of excess leucine level on branched-chain amino acid metabolism in growing pigs.

Travel and visitors

Dr. Stein, Vanessa, and Su A traveled to Las Vegas for the International Phytate Summit Technical Symposium on April 6. Dr. Stein gave a talk on "Requirements for digestible Ca in growing pigs."

On April 19, Dr. Stein gave a presentation at the Nutritional Sciences Graduate Student Association Annual Symposium. The talk was entitled: "Protein quality in human foods determined based on digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS)." The next week, he traveled to Denmark for the Danish Swine Producers Feed Seminar on April 25. His talk there was entitled "Requirements for digestible Ca in weanling and growing-finishing pigs."
