April 2018 Lab News

Achievements

Jerubella Abelilla defended her Ph. D. dissertation on April 17. The topic was "Fermentation and energetic value of fiber in feed ingredients and diets fed to pigs."

Two days later, Vanessa Lagos defended her Master's thesis, "Requirements for digestible calcium by growing pigs." Vanessa will remain with our lab to work on her Ph. D.

Charmaine Espinosa was awarded the Mitchell Fellowship in Animal Nutrition for the 2018-2019 academic year. This fellowship "recognizes excellent graduate students who are specializing in animal nutrition in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois."

Su A Lee has received a Wilson G. Pond International Travel Award. She will use it to attend the 14th International Symposium on Digestive Physiology of Pigs (DPP2018), to be held in Brisbane, Australia from August 21-24.

Congratulations to our very talented lab members!

New experiments

Molly began a study of ileal and total tract digestibility of energy and carbohydrates in hybrid rye fed to growing pigs.

Minoy started an experiment on the effect of decreasing crude protein levels after weaning on growth performance and fecal scores of pigs.

Travel and visitors

Hannah went to Saint Joseph, MI to receive a three day training on our new LECO machine at the LECO headquarters.

On April 17, Dr. Casey Bradley and Shelby Corray from DSM visited to talk about some research we're working on with them as well as what DSM is working on in the area of monogastric nutrition. While here, they also joined us in celebrating Dr. Stein's birthday!

We also had a visit from Yojaine Perez Hernandez, the head researcher in Bromatology, Physiology and Microbiology from the Instituto de Investigaciones Porcinas (Swine Research Institute) in Havana, Cuba. He presented some aspects or his research program in Cuba, and had a tour of our labs and the campus.
