Personnel changes

Tanawong Maison and Orawan Amnucksoradej finished their work here and have returned to Thailand. Tanawong got his Ph. D. and is returning to The Charoen Pokphand (C. P.) Group. Orawan spent 2013 compiling a comprehensive resource detailing nutrient values for over 200 feed ingredients. She will be returning to her position as a nutritionist with Vet Products Group in Bangkok. It was a pleasure to have Tanawong and Orawan in our group, and we wish them best of luck in their new life in Thailand.

Lab activities

Kelly started a trial to determine amino acid digestibility in soybean meal produced throughout the United States and fed to pigs.

Travel and visitors

Dr. Stein went to Madrid for Julio Díaz's Ph. D. defense. Julio spent time with us in 2012 and again in 2013 as an exchange student from Universidad Politecnica in Madrid.

Oscar wrote about his time spent in Switzerland in November:

On November 9th, I went to Buhler, a company located in Uzwil, Switzerland. The reason of this trip was to meet Ester Vinyeta and conduct some extrusion and pellet procedures for my next experiment, which is focus on the effects of pelleting and extrusion on energy and nutrient digestibility in diets with different levels of fiber fed to pigs. During two weeks, we ground, mixed, extruded, and pelleted several diets for this experiment.

It was an amazing opportunity to go to Switzerland and visit the headquarters of a company that is present in 140 countries around the world with almost 9000 employees. I hope to go again to Buhler and conduct more experiments with Ester. I had an amazing learning experience with her.

Oscar also traveled home to Colombia over winter break, as did Caroline.
