Lab activities
Oscar started a study of the effects of extrusion and pelleting on energy and nutrient digestibility.
Caroline started an experiment looking at additivity of values for apparent and standardized total tract digestibility of calcium in mixed diets.
Kate finished a meat and bone meal trial and an antibiotic trial with nursery pigs.
Travel and visitors
Dr. Stein and all grad students attended the Midwest Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science. Caroline, Oscar, Kelly, Neil, and Chelsie gave oral presentations, and Oscar, Neil, and John presented posters. Dr. Stein also chaired the David Baker Amino Acids Symposium, which focused on the concept of the ideal protein for pigs.
Kelly attended the 2014 Student Leadership Conference in Wichita, KS on March 14-15.
On March 31, Dr. Stein and Kate visited Art's Way Scientific in Monona, Iowa. Art's Way is the company that's building our new calorimetry chamber. The new chamber should be delivered in May.
Dr. John Htoo and Dr. Vincent Hess of Evonik Industries and Dr. Helle Lærke of Aarhus University in Denmark visited on March 20th. They had lunch with our lab members, and later gave a talk on AA requirements and immunity.
