March 2016 Lab News

Achievements

On March 25, Neil Jaworski successfully defended his Ph. D. thesis on "Utilization of Energy in High-Fiber Diets Fed to Pigs." Congratulations, Neil!

In last month's newsletter, we noted that Caroline González-Vega had been selected to receive the Dr. Tim S. Stahly Outstanding Swine Nutrition Midwest Graduate Student Award. At the Midwest meeting, she was presented with that award as well as the Animal Science Young Scholar Award for her research accomplishments. We're very proud of her achievements and know she will go on to do great things in her career.

Travel

Dr. Stein and members of the lab attended the Midwest Meeting of the American Society of Animal Science from March 14–16 in Des Moines, Iowa. Caroline, John, Laura, Neil, Diego, and Gloria gave oral presentations, and Neil also presented a poster.

Dr. Stein was at the University of Alberta as a committee member on the PhD committee for Mr. Xun Zhou. Mr. Zhou successfully defended his PhD dissertation entitled "Nutritional Value of Low-Fibre and High-Fat Canola Co-Products in Pigs" on March 2nd, 2016. While at the University of Alberta, he also gave a seminar for graduate students and faculty entitled "Digestibility of Ca in Feed Ingredients and Requirements for Digestible Ca by Pigs". At the Midwest meeting, he gave an invited presentation entitled "Evaluating Protein Quality of Human Foods using the Pig as a Model". Finally, on March 24 he visited Cargill Animal Nutrition in Elk River, MN and gave a presentation titled "Amino acid digestibility in feed ingredients fed to pigs and reasons for variability in estimates for amino acid digestibility".
