March 2020 Lab News

Achievements

On March 24th, Vanessa Lagos passed her preliminary exam, one step closer to reaching the great goal. We are so proud of you!!!

Woongbi Kwon won the Graduate Students Oral Competition and Dr. Su A Lee received the Animal Science Young Scholars award, at ASAS Midwest Meeting.

Travel and visitors

From March 2 - 4, our team participated in the ASAS Midwest 2020, Omaha - Nebraska. Dr. Hans Stein was the chair of David Baker Symposium and the postdocs and students gave oral presentations and presented posters:

Woongbi Kwon, PhD student, participated and won the graduate student oral competition at ASAS Midwest meeting. He gave a presentation about "Effects of dietary isoleucine and valine supplementation to excess or low leucine diets on nitrogen balance and metabolism of branched-chained amino acids in growing pigs."

Jessica Acosta, visiting scholar, participated in the undergraduate student oral competition at ASAS Midwest meeting. She gave a presentation about "Ileal digestibility of amino acids in a new source of high-protein distillers dried grains with solubles fed to growing pigs".

Dr. Maryane Oliveira, postdoctoral research associate, presented about "Digestibility of energy and dietary fiber by growing pigs and concentrations of digestible and metabolizable energy in corn or sorghum base diets without or with microbial enzymes".

Dr. Charmaine Espinosa, postdoctoral research associate, gave two presentations about: "Effects of copper hydroxychloride on growth performance and abundance of genes involved in lipid metabolism of growing pigs", and "Effects of cooper hydroxycloride and distillers dried grains with solubles on intestinal microbial protein concentration and digestibility of energy, crude protein, and fat by growing pigs".

Dr. Su A Lee, postdoctoral research associate, won a Young Scholar award and her presentation was about: "Digestibility of calcium and phosphorus in feed ingredients fed to gestating sows and growing pigs". and She also presented about: "Dietary Ca decreases digestibility of P in late gestating sows, but blood biomarkers may be used to predict bone formation and resorption", and "Effects of dietary amino acid concentration on digestibility of amino acids in soybean meal and soy protein concentrate fed to growing pigs".

Diego Rodriguez Ms., research specialist, gave a presentation about "Digestibility of energy and nutrients and concentration of metabolizable energy in soybean expellers and soybean meal fed to growing pigs".

Vanessa Lagos, Ph.D. student, gave two presentations about: "Effect of formulating diets based on a ratio between STTD Ca and STTD P and the inclusion of phytase on the calcium and phosphorus balance of growing pigs" and "Effect of formulating diets based on a ratio between STTD Ca and STTD P and the inclusion of phytase on growth performance, plasma Ca and P, and bone ash of pigs from 11 to 130 kg".

Molly McGhee, Ph.D. student, talked about: "Hybrid rye may replace up to 75% of the corn in diets for gestating and lactating snows without negatively impact sow and piglet performance".

Carly Rundle, Ph.D. student, her presentation was about "Isoquinoline alkaloids increase apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids and crude protein and apparent total tract digestibility of crude protein by finishing pigs fed corn-soybean meal diets" at ASAS Midwest meeting.

Joseph Limbach, master student, gave a presentation about: "Effects of dietary crude protein level on growth performance, fecal score, gastrointestinal Ph, and blood characteristics in weanling pigs fed antibiotic-free diets".

Paola Lancheros, master student, had a presentation about " Enhanced torula yeast has increased nutritional value compared to fish meal when fed to weanling pigs".

Hannah Bailey, Ph.D. student, presented her poster about “Amino acid digestibility and digestible indispensable amino acid scores of a few protein isolates and concentrates derived from cereal grains, plants proteins, or dairy proteins”.

Diego Lopez, master student, presented his poster about “Mineral composition of feed grade monocalcium phosphate”.

Minoy Cristobal presented a poster about “Concentrations of digestible and metabolizable energy and digestibility of phosphorus in a new source of high-protein distillers dried grains with solubles fed to growing pigs”.

On March 6th, Lisanne Vershuren visited our lab, she is a PhD student at Wageningen University and she also works for Topigs Norsvin. She gave a presentation about her research and talked about the work is done at the company.
