Accomplishments

Sarah Cervantes-Pahm successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis entitled "Digestibility of energy and nutrients in novel carbohydrates and cereal grains by pigs" on April 25. Sarah plans to return home to the Philippines.

Ferdinando was awarded the Mitchell Fellowship in Animal Nutrition for 2011-2012. He also received a scholarship from the Ethanol Council for his work with DDGS, and he will attend their meeting in Kansas City next month.

Lab activities

Oscar finished animal work for two experiments on the effects of PepSoyGen in diets fed to weanling pigs, and started a third.

Caroline began an experiment on endogenous losses of calcium.

Jin started an experiment to determine the digestible and metabolizable energy content of low-Kunitz soybean meals.

Neil finished animal work for an experiment on ileal and fecal digestibility in growing pigs fed 30% DDGS supplemented with xylanase and phytase. He also began two experiments on the effect of xylanase and phytase supplementation on growth performance and on digestibility of fiber-containing feeds.

Visitors

Dr. Anru Wang from Beijing DBN Technology Group Co., Ltd, China, visited our Lab on April 21, 2011, and learned about the research we are conducting. He also had a chance to listen to Sarah Cervantes-Pahm’s rehearsal of her PhD defense presentation.

A group of European swine producers visited our lab on March 27. They learned about the results and implication of our recent nutrition research.
