Personnel

Dr. Juliana Almeida is our new postdoctoral research fellow. Dr. Almedia has a B.S. degree in Veterinary Medicine from Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Betim, Brazil. She then came to the University of Illinois and earned her Master's degree and Ph. D. working with Dr. Pettigrew. For her Master's thesis, she studied the nutrient value of distiller’s co-products fed to pigs. Her Ph. D. dissertation was on "Identification of mechanisms of beneficial effects of dietary clays in pigs and chicks during an enteric infection." Now, she will be re-focusing on swine nutrition in the Stein lab.

Gloria Casas will be with us for a year as a visiting scholar. She is on sabbatical from the National University of Colombia in Bogota, where she is a professor specializing in swine production. Oscar and Caroline are former students of hers.

Hector Salgado, also from the National University of Colombia, will be working with us for a year as an intern.

Niels Geertsen also joined us as a new visiting scholar. Niels is from Denmark, and previously studied at the University of Copenhagen.

Welcome to all of our new arrivals!

Lab activities

Oscar finished an experiment looking at performance of weanling pigs fed diets containing hydrolyzed yeast.

Kelly wrapped up an experiment on amino acid digestibility in fermented soybean meal, conventional soybean meal, fish meal, and poultry by-product meal fed to weanling pigs.

Kate started a study of digestibility of micro minerals in growing pigs fed diets containing extruded minerals, one on the use of fermented soybean meal in weanling pigs, and one on amino acid digestibility in novel canola meals fed to growing pigs.

Caroline finished the manuscript for her experiment to determine the site of net absorption of calcium.

Oscar started a study of the effects of extrusion and pelleting on nutrient digestibility in diets with different levels of fiber.

Shelby finished an experiment on amino acid digestibilty in wheat DDGS.

Travel

Neil took some time out from his summer in China to visit Thailand in early August, then returned home late in the month. We're glad to have you back, Neil.

Dr. Stein attended the wedding of Stein Lab alum Shelly Widmer on August 10.
