Personnel changes

On Oct. 12, Guillermo returned to Spain to finish his Ph. D. work at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). We were glad to have Guillermo as a scholar in our lab, and wish him the best in his studies.

New experiments

Su A started a study of the effects of phase of gestation and microbial phytase on STTD and retention of Ca in diets fed to gestating sows.

Molly started an experiment to determine the effects of microbial phytase on STTD of phosphorus in cereal grains fed to growing pigs.

Kate started an evaluation of bioavailability of ValAMINO Plus relative to L-Valine in post-weaning pigs.

Travel

October was another busy month of travel for Dr. Stein:

• On Oct. 5, he gave a talk entitled "Digestibility of Calcium and requirements for digestible Ca by growing pigs" at the Philippine Society of Animal Nutritionists (PHILSAN) Convention in Manila, the Philippines. He was also named an Honorary Member of PHILSAN (photo, right).
• On Oct. 6, he gave a talk for the San Miguel Feed Company in Manila called "Digestibility of macronutrients by growing pigs"
• On Oct. 12-14, he taught a graduate level course in "Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pigs" at the University of the Philippines. Approximately 60 students participated in the course.
• On Oct. 17, he gave a talk at the "1st Strategic Convergence | Latest Nutrition and Management Technology towards Globalization" conference in Alabang, sponsored by JA Farms. The talk was titled "Evaluation of the protein quality of feed ingredients."
• Finally, he traveled to Australia, where on Oct. 26 he gave a talk on "Procedures for determining digestibility of amino acids, lipids, fibre, phosphorus, and calcium in feed ingredients fed to pigs" at the "Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition" meeting in Armidale.
