August 2019 Lab News

Achievements

We hosted the Novus group, they are students from different universities in China. Our students talked about the research we do in our laboratory.

We also hosted Dr. Miriam A. Tempra from Nuevo Milenio visiting the Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory.

Travel

On Aug. 29, Hans H. Stein travelled to Worthington, Ohio, to participate in the Animal Ag Strategic Discussion, which was organized by the Ohio Soybean council.

Molly McGhee traveled to Wisconsin to present at the Practical Farmers of Iowa Small Grains Conference on August 16. Her presentation was about the nutritional value of hybrid rye for pigs.

Personnel changes

Natalia Fanelli finished her studies in Brazil and returned to our laboratory as a visiting scholar.

New experiments

Molly McGhee started an experiment with nursery pigs. The title of the experiment is "Effects of replacing corn with hybrid rye in diets for nursery pigs on growth performance and diarrhea incidence".

Carly Rundle began an experiment: “Effects of isoquinoline alkaloids on apparent total tract digestibility of energy, fiber, and N, on concentration of digestible and metabolizable energy in diets fed to growing pigs, and on nitrogen balance of pigs”.

Vanessa Lagos started an experiment: "Effect of reducing the concentration of limestone and monocalcium phosphate in the diet on gastric pH, fecal score, growth performance, blood characteristics, and bone ash of weanling pigs."

Hannah Bailey: began an experiment this month and the title is: "Determination of a possible carryover effect of feeding spray dried plasma protein on energy, fiber, Ca, and P digestibility in nursery pigs."

Cristhiam Muñoz started an experiment of "Effects of crude protein concentration on hit production, energy retention, and concentration of net energy of growing pigs."

Natalia Fanelli started an experiment titled: "Determination of Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) values for seven Arla proteins."

Joan Lluis Archs Toledo: began two experiments: "Effects of intrinsic phytase from hybrid rye on P and Ca digestibility in a corn-soybean meal diet" and "Effects of super dosing 4 different sources of phytase on amino acid digestibility."
